PAHL Crowns 4 Champions
Friday, August 13, 2010 5:32:04 PM

Entering the tournament as the second seed in the A division, Ace Hardware captures the crown by taking down number one seed Stenys Big Dogs by the final score of 6-4. After trailing by one entering the third, Big Dog Brian Soik tied the game up at three with a power play goal at the 13:59 mark assisted by Tom Hoffman and Mike Soik. The game remained tied until the four minute mark when Ace would recapture the lead at 4-3 with a shot by Ryan Stenstrup and a double assist by Marc Schuessler and Scott Stroud. Forty seconds later Ace would strike again with an unassisted score by Stroud to take the lead 5-3. But then the Dogs came growling back with another goal with only two minutes remaining as Ryan Jones would find the back of the net with a great pass from Hoffman. Hoffman had a great night with the three assists and the Dogs looked to have a chance to get it tied up once again. A minute later Ace’s Dennis Zamanovic would provide the dagger pounding one in with only a minute left to play providing the worst lead in hockey, two goals. Scott Stroud recorded the assist on the goal and the Dogs could get their legs no higher. Ace has been awarded their claim as Champion of the PAHL A open division. Congratulations.

In the B division, number three seed Korbellys would square off against number four Saber Cats in what started out to be a taming of the hungry Cats by Korbellys. Brian Seremet got the scoring started at the 8:50 mark of the first with the assist going to Vince Andrusczk. Then a nice unassisted shot by Ryan O’Connor at the 5:00 minute mark and Korbellys led by two. Two minutes later Adam Bastjan would send one into the Cats den with nice feeds by Tom Williams and Gus Reed. Wait, they were not done yet, with just twenty seconds left in the early period Brian Seremet would hook up with Gus Reed for yet another goal and Korbellys were feeling confident at the end of one with a 4-0 lead. Then in the second, the exact opposite would transpire as the Cats came roaring back with a goal by Jason Begley with a great pass by Ryan Peterson. Ten seconds later, hello, a shot by Matt Bazorra from a feed by Leo Porkka and we are at 4-2 and Korbellys is wondering. Three minutes tick off and at the 9:20 mark the deadly Begley would strike again with an unassisted goal to get within one at 4-3. Suddenly Kurt Anderson picks up the puck, passes it up to Sam Theis who in turn feeds it over to Mike Neal sending it past Dave Coutts and the wheels have officially come off and we are tied at four heading to the third. Game on! Back and forth we go through the third exchanging shots that are turned away until Sam Theis decides that enough is enough and fires one past Coutts with feeds by Joe Theis and Peterson. The Cats have clawed their way back and lead by one 5-4. Twenty seconds later the Theis boys are right back at with Sam taking the wind out of Coutts with a shot that all Coutts could do is turn around and pull it out of his net. Saber Cats take the crown by a final score of 6-4. What a comeback.

In C division action, once again third and fourth seeded teams would vie for the championship. 4th Base and the Fighting Sue took to the ice and it would be Fighting Sue getting on the board first at the 1:08 mark with a score by Billy Kid assisted by Matt Miller. The Sue leads one zip after one. 4th base entered the second period swinging with Chris Rhine getting one past with feeds by Speedster Alex Ochowitz and Scott Shandler at the 13:37 point of the second. Then at the 9:28 mark 4th Base would score again to take the lead, this time the speedy Ochowitz would find the back of the Sue net with a nice assist by Scott Buck. 2-1. A minute later it was Ochowitz again blistering another past the Sue goalie with a great feed from Mike Stine. 3-1. This thing is far from over. The Fighting Sue climb right back into it with a great shot by Kid with the assist going to Tyson. 3-2. If anything this only served as an irritant to the 4th Base squad. With 2:30 left in the second, Kyle Short would get 4th Base back to the two goal lead with a shot assisted by Stine. Then wouldn’t you know it, twenty seconds later, wham, in it goes again, this time Rhine would combine from Ochowitz and Shandler for what would end up being the game winner as the Sue could get no more. Ochowitz would put on a show adding another goal late in the third giving him the hat trick and a playmaker for a six point game. Way to go! 4th Base are the reigning C division Champs.

What’s this, another 4th base in a championship round? And yes, once again we have seed three taking on seed four. Talk about parity. This time we have the Pirates matched up against 4th Base. This game would be a defensive battle from the word go. 4th Base would take the lead midway through the first with an unassisted shot by Andrew Tilley. One minute later 4th Base would take a two goal lead when Andrew Justman would find the back of the net with a fine coast to coast effort. The Pirates were not done however as they put a bit of a scare into the opponent with a nice feed by Spencer Chumbley finding Jeremy Hogan and with one minute left we have drama, 2-1. It was not to be for the Pirates as they could not overcome the eighteen minutes of penalties and 4th Base would slide into the championship by a final score of 2-1. Great game.

PAHL will take a short break but will be back in action with forty two teams covering six divisions beginning September 10, 2010. See you then!

A division playoff action got underway last weekend with #1 seed Stenys Big Dogs being idle bye benefit of an awarded bye. O’Connor’s/Pete’s Pizza earned their way into the second round by exterminating the Blue Jackets by a final of 5-3. Phil Parda would insure this win by finding the back of the bee’s hive four times while little brother Adam Parda would turn away shot after shot in a great goal tending exhibition. In B playoff action number one seed Ticket King made easy work of Stenys Big Dogs crushing the Dogs in a shutout 11-0. Brendon Doud, and John Lamoreaux each had two goals, Lamoreaux adding an assist for a three point game. Also with a three point game was Matt Chovaz. Matt recorded a nice playmaker to assist his team into the second round. Korbellys to no surprise will also go to second round action as they pick up a win over the Ice Peckers by the final of 6-3. Adam Bastjan had the hot stick for Korbelly’s scoring two goals and adding an assist. Meanwhile the Saber Cats were busy clawing up the Red Hawks downing the Hawks 5-2.  Saber Cats proved that spreading the puck will produce playoff wins as ten different Cats accounted for eleven total points. In an upset KSB Insurance delivered a huge blow to Labatt Blue 5-4 giving Labatt a surprising first round elimination from the tournament. Scott Sengpiel and Billy the Schick Schicker each scored two goals to seal the win.

In C action top seeded Dusters are going to round two by defeating the Predators by a final of 6-4. Steve Hyma and Jace Raumann each had two goals and an assist to put this one in the books.  In the D division, the Pirates will also advance by virtue of having St. Pats walk the plank with a final score of 3-1. Again an example of a team that is moving the puck well as six different players account for the six total points. Crazy Horse will also advance as they tame the Wolf Pack in a close battle 5-4. Josh Friedl would make sure that Crazy Horse would climb the pole finding the back of the Wolves den four times. 4th Base sent Lincoln Avenue Dental packing by a final of 6-4. In the A division, Steny’s Big Dogs made their final claim of the season on Chmill Insurance with the settlement going to the Dogs by a final of 10-5. Ryan Pliska, Adam Freeman, and Tom Hoffman each had two goals to keep the Big Dogs barking. Steny's captures the number one seed with a regular season record of 8-3 while the idle Ace Hardware claims the second spot. O’Connor’s/Pete’s Pizza with a record of 5-5-1 capture the fifth seed with the Blue Jackets getting sixth at 5-6.

The top seed in the B division has yet to be settled with Ticket King looking to be the front runner. Ticket King downed the Red hawks in a close one 5-3. Brendan Doud poured in the hat trick to help secure the win. Korbelly's can take the number one seed but will need some help. They will need to beat KSB Insurance on Friday, have Ticket King lose to the Ice Peckers and then win the goal differential tie breaker with Ticket King leading by nine goals in that category. Watch for both Korbelly’s and Ticket King to run up the scores should the opportunity present itself.  Labatt Blue finishes the season with a fine 8-3 record and can do no worse than the third seed as the deliver a 9-0 shutout blow to the Beer Barrons. Neil Domanski and Bryan Prittie each had two goals while Prittie also added two assists for a four point night. KSB Insurance playing well as of late picked up a win over the Ice Peckers in a very tight battle 6-5. Scott Sengpiel posted his best performance of the season for KSB picking up a hat trick coupled with an assist.

The C division was in action on Friday with the Dusters locking up the number one seed by virtue of the goal differential tie breaker over the mighty Warriors,  plus 32 to plus 19. Dusters picked up their ninth win of the season beating Paulie's Ice Breakers by the final of 8-3. Brian Klipple had two goals and two assists to lead all scorers. Russell Gleisner led the scoring for the Warriors with two goals in the game.  4th Base takes the third seed as they nip out an overtime victory over the Predators 6-5. Once again it was Speed Skater Alex Ochowitz getting it done for 4th Base scoring two goals and adding an assist to secure the spot. Fighting Sue captures the fourth spot picking up a forfeit win over the grounded Aviators. The Black Birds finish up with a 4-7 mark as they close Bar Louie by a final of 6-1. Jon Rader recorded a five point night scoring the hat trick while adding two assists. Tony Gionati also had a fine game finding the back of the Black Birds nest twice. On Sunday night, C division playoff action got underway with the Predators advancing to the second round as they eliminate Paulie’s Ice Breaker by a final of 10-5.  Jaje Siegert recorded a hat trick combined with a playmaker for a fine six point outing. In the other preliminary round game Aviators once again could not get off the ground and had to enter yet another forfeit as they send the Black Birds flying into second round playoff action.

In D division play, WOW! Those Krazy Puckers got their first win in the final game of the regular season edging out Shooters Service by the final of 4-3. Mitch Janich records the hat trick and Jackie Kelly added two assists to keep the Puckers from finishing winless. Shooters locks up the top seed however with a great 9-2 record. Lincoln Avenue Dental takes the second spot at 7-3-1 as they numb 4th Base 8-5. Brian Kelenhofer gets the hat trick for the pain makers to cap this one. The Wolf pack howled their way into the third spot as the shut out Crazy Horse 2-0. Ryan Judge scored the only two goals in a tightly contested affair. A resurgent St. Pats team had the Pirates walking the plank with a shutout win 4-0. Cody Brehm caught fire and scored all four goals to close out the regular season for the D division.
